Grammatically unstable placeholders and morpho-syntactic remedies: evidence from East Asian languages

Abstract When a communicator faces word-formulation problem, they may use placeholder (PH) such as whatchamacallit to avoid producing target expression or delay it. A PH is dummy element used fill in the syntactic slot of item that unable unwilling produce (e.g. due memory lapse). Previous studies have generally been concerned with grammatically stable PHs , you-know-what ), ‘grammatically stable’ sense are acceptably (as long syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic conditions met) on their own, without morphosyntactic aid. In this article, we describe unstable’ wh -derived three East Asian languages: Japanese, Korean, Mandarin. To give specific example, typically, Japanese dare ‘who’ not fully acceptable unless it doubled (i.e. dare∼dare ) combines non- - sore where medial demonstrative ‘that’).
